Baby Boomers: Now and Then
The Baby Boomers are the newborns that were born between the years 1946 to 1964, the peak enduring 1957. This event in history is remembered because of the major increase in rates of baby births beginning around nine months after the veterans returned from World War II.
At the end of World War II, the survivors returned home. Many of the citizens were anticipating on having children. Some historians believe that after the disheartening times during wars that had lasted for sixteen years before; including the World War II, which lasted six years and ended in 1945, the citizens had craved to be average by having children. Baby births grew quickly as each year went on. In 1947, 3.8 million infants were born and five years later in 1952, 3.9 million infants were born. Through the eighteen year period, 1946 to 1964, 76.4 million infants were born; almost 40% of the population. By 1960, Baby Boomers families embodied ⅓ of the US society. There are two different classifications of Baby Boomers: Leading Edge Boomers and Trailing Edge Boomers. They each encountered different cultural experiences than the other. |
